What Is Maos Chitim?

As Pesach approaches, we begin to hear the familiar term Maos Chitim. But what does it really mean?

Maos Chitim is more than just a seasonal phrase — it’s one of the very first mitzvos brought down in the Shulchan Aruch regarding Pesach. It refers to the obligation to ensure that needy families have everything they need to celebrate Yom Tov properly. In earlier times, this meant providing wheat for matzah. Today, it means much more: matzah, wine, produce, chicken, and all the essentials needed to experience Pesach with dignity and joy.

As we prepare our homes, shop for our favorite haggados, and ready our Yom Tov tables, we’re reminded that before anything else, this is the first mitzvah of the season — making sure that others can do the same.

Maos Chitim is not just about charity. It’s about enabling someone to fulfill the mitzvos of Pesach — something they simply wouldn’t be able to do without our help.

And with the ongoing challenges facing so many in Eretz Yisroel right now, this mitzvah is more urgent than ever.
